Famous For Its Furniture

Hickory’s roots in the furniture industry can be traced back to the early 1900s with the first company appropriately being called the Hickory Furniture Company. Over the years, additional furniture manufacturers opened their doors, and today, it’s estimated that as much as 60% of all furniture in American homes originates from the state of North Carolina. If you’re looking for a large selection of some of Hickory’s finest locally-made furniture, you’ll want to plan a trip to Hickory Furniture Mart.

Popular Tourist Destination

Did you know that North Carolina is the sixth most visited state in the United States and the Hickory Metro area is one of the most popular destinations? In this medium-sized town of just a little over 40,000 people, there are dozens of restaurants, wineries, shops, natural areas, and other attractions within a short distance of the city center. Visitors and residents alike like to stroll through the specialty shops and boutiques, enjoy a meal at one of the many farm-to-table restaurants, or sit back and relax with a glass of their favorite locally-made wine or microbrew.

Outdoor Activities

The relatively mild weather in Hickory makes it a perfect place to enjoy outdoor activities year-round. Bakers Mountain Park is one place you won’t want to miss. It features over six miles of walkable trails located in a picturesque forest. It also contains areas for grilling and picnicking plus it has an observation platform where you can stop for a moment to see if you can spot any of the abundant wildlife that resides there.

Another popular place to spend the day is Lake Hickory. Located along the northern edge of town, it covers over 4,000 acres and has 105 miles of shoreline. Lake Hickory is ideal for water sports and recreation. Visitors to the lake can enjoy swimming, fishing, boating, water skiing, and jet skiing, among other things. Don’t have a boat? No problem. The lake also has its own marina where you can rent fishing boats, pontoon boats, deck boats, and everything in between.

If your idea of outdoor fun is watching a car race, then you’ll feel right at home at the Hickory Motor Speedway. It’s one of stock car racing’s most storied venues and it’s often referred to as “The Birthplace of NASCAR Stars”. The speedway can seat almost 13,000 fans and has been around for over 70 years. Although it’s seen its fair share of changes over the years, it still remains one of the most popular attractions in Hickory.

An Easy Drive To the Big City

Many people choose to live in Hickory because it offers that small-town feel while only being about an hour away from two of the biggest cities in North Carolina. Hickory is conveniently located between Asheville and Charlotte, so if you’re ever in the mood to check out some new attractions or plan a fun weekend getaway that’s still close to home, Hickory has the ideal location.

Beer, Wine, and Spirits

If you enjoy traveling to different places to try out their locally-made libations, then Hickory is the place for you! North Carolina is known for its bourbon whiskey and you’ll find plenty of it in the distilleries around town. Each one takes pride in using only the finest ingredients and family recipes. You’ll taste the love in every glass.

Is whiskey not really your thing? That’s okay because there are plenty of wineries and breweries in the area as well. Keep in mind that Hickory is just over an hour away from Asheville — the town with most breweries per capita in the U.S. Although Hickory doesn’t quite have the scale that Asheville does, you’ll still find quite a few, all within a few miles of downtown.
